nifty green arrowRAQ:  Get Daily Updates via Email
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Friday, 4/11/2008 around 12PM EST by John  |  permalink
Are you a new or infrequent visitor to NNDD? Hey, I understand how busy life gets and sometimes we can only hit so many websites in a day.

Now you can get your daily NNDD fix via email. Take a look at the left sidebar and enter your email address. Daily deal posts are collected and mailed out once a day, automatically, by Feedburner.

Now NNDD is available on the website, via RSS, or daily email. I'm still working on that brainwave delivery device - my apologies if you have been seeing a lot of purple zebras in your dreams lately.

nifty green arrowRAQ:  Digg Links Added
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Wednesday, 2/13/2008 around 12AM EST by John  |  permalink
I decided to party like it's 2005 and add Digg links in the header for each post. Yeah, better late than never. Let's see if anyone uses them. Here's my much neglected Digg profile if you're into stockpiling digital friends.

nifty green arrowRAQ:  Hello to the RSS Feed Readers
 Talk Back (1 comment)»  |  Tuesday, 2/5/2008 around 8AM EST by John  |  permalink
Hello to the feed readers out there! How's your day going? Thanks for keeping NNDD on your feeds list. Now and then I like to check in and make sure everyone is happy. I haven't heard of any RSS feed problems for several months now, so here's an open invitation if you need any tweaks for broken link patterns or odd title characters. Click through to the post and use the Talk Back section, or just shoot me an email at john ATniftyness DOTTTT com. The extra T's are a (probably failed) attempt to trick spambots.

Want to subscribe to the RSS feeds? There are two links on the leftsidebar. I'll post them here as well:
  • NNDD - Everything RSS Feed
  • NNDD - Deals/Free Only RSS Feed

  • nifty green arrowRAQ:  NNDD Version 4.0 Now Live
     Talk Back (9 comments)»  |  Friday, 8/31/2007 around 2PM EST by John  |  permalink
Hi everyone! The new NNDD backend is now live. I put in several dozen hours on this, so I hope everything works okay. Please let me know if you notice anything odd.

For the most part, things should look the same. Users will have to re-register, but I've got that down to only three fields. New additions include:
    • New custom search backend (much faster)
    • Brand new custom comments section (new layout, faster, more reliable)
    • Automated comment spam blocking
    • Rebate icons
    • Expiration icons and search methods
I have plenty of other features in mind for the future. Thanks for visiting my site - I appreciate your interest and I'm working hard to constantly add improvements.

nifty green arrowRAQ:  RSS Feeds Moved to Feedburner
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Wednesday, 8/8/2007 around 1PM EST by John  |  permalink
Howdy to the RSS subscribers. I've decided to give Feedburner a shot. Don't worry, I'm forwarding things on the server side so you shouldn't have to change anything on your end. Please let me know via Talk Back or email if anything is wrong with the feed!

While I was checking things out, I noticed that the feed titles were missing some info like store, price, etc. I've added that back in - hopefully you'll find it useful.

Want to check out a feed? The links are over on the left navigation bar.

nifty green arrowRAQ:  RSS Feeds now in RSS 2.0
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 7/2/2007 around 10PM EST by John  |  permalink
Hey RSS readers: I've updated the RSS feeds to RSS 2.0 and validated it on FeedValidator.org. Please let me know if you're having any problems with the feeds!

Oh, and that's just the start of the improvements. The rest should be up sometime this month.

nifty green arrowRAQ:  NNDD Survey 1.0 Results
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Wednesday, 1/31/2007 around 6PM EST by John  |  permalink
The results are in for the first NNDD Reader Survey, and I must say that I'm impressed and intrigued. A few of you asked me if I would share the findings, so here we go.
    • The vast majority (90%+) of people replying have been visiting for a year or longer. I guess I must be doing something right every now and then. Thanks for the dedication!

    • There are slightly more East Coast readers (55%) than the rest, with Central and Pacific tying for second place at 15-20% each. The time of day that people visit is mostly average throughout the day, with more late night folks than I had expected (20%). I'll keep that in mind when deciding to post a 11:30pm deal instead of sleeping.

    • It's a 80/20 male/female split. I figured NNDD would track higher with guys since I am one and my brain works accordingly when evaluating items. I do try and keep the ladies (and girlfriends) in mind, though, and my internet-shopping wife clues me in on clothing and jewelry deals now and then.

    • Every responder ranked NNDD's overall layout as Great or Decent. It was a good bit of work on the major redesign around a year ago, and I'm happy you guys like it. Speaking of layout, I got a boatload of insightful comments and tips about little things to tweak. This is extremely valuable and I thank you. I'll may not have time to work on all of them, but rest assured that a few improvements are on the way.

    • While most of you (70%) thought the content mix was great, there was a call for more deals and freebies. The free stuff used to be more plentiful in days gone by, but I'll list the good stuff I see. Several people enjoyed the recent "Easy Opening" game post (myself included - it's addictive).

    • The Computers, Cheap Gadgets, and Consumer Electronics were all huge favorites (80-90%), with significant (15-40%) interest in every other category as well. I thought maybe one or two of them would end up with really weak support but that wasn't the case. There was a high interest in seeing more tool and Dell deals, as well as requests for diapers, lawn equipment, books, SLR cameras, etc.

    • Around 30% of you are registered for the "Talk Back" section, which allows for comments on each post. Lots of people didn't know that it only took around 15 seconds to register. Recently I had to turn off guest posting because of a huge influx of comment spam. The system does leave some things to be desired but it's the best option available for the posting engine I use. I've made slight edits where I could to improve the experience. Perhaps some day I'll summon up the strength to switch over to WordPress or something similar.

    • The RSS feeds seem to be more popular than I expected. I'm glad they're being used and enjoyed. I've already addressed a few RSS suggestions to make the feed a little better.
I was expecting to learn a few things from the survey, but it was even better than I had expected. Thanks again to everyone that took part in the survey. Heck, thanks for reading this far down in the post at all!

nifty green arrowRAQ:  Amazon Hunting Links
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Friday, 1/5/2007 around 11PM EST by John  |  permalink
If you look on the left menu column, you'll see some new Amazon Hunting links. They link to various Amazon departments, displaying only items that are 90% off their original retail price. I thought they were interesting when I came across a page of them recently, so I tossed them up. In some cases that retail price is overstated, so the deal isn't that great. In other cases, there is some decent stuff. I figured I would give it a shot and see what you guys think. Let me know in Talk Back.

nifty green arrowRAQ:  Talk Back Speedup
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Friday, 1/5/2007 around 9AM EST by John  |  permalink
It's barely worth mentioning, but maybe it annoyed you too. Have you ever noticed that after logging in to post a Talk Back comment you have to click again to get to the comments page? Now you don't. It will take you back there immediately.

And if you're putting off on a comment because you need to register first, give it a second look. Registering is only four fields. I just was forced to implement that requirement so I can ban all the comment spam bots by their IP and other details.

    nifty green arrowRAQ:  Privacy Policy
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Sunday, 4/2/2006 around 5PM EST by John  |  permalink
Just in case you were curious, here's the NNDD Privacy Policy.

Right now the only data I collect is an email and IP address for users that decide to register for a Talk Back login. This info is only used for helping with lost passwords. I won't use that email address to form a mailing list or spam you. I'll never sell your email to spammers. Some of my hit counters might collect other anonymous, industry-standard data for site improvement and tracking purposes, and that info will stay anonymous.

If you're under the age of 18, you might encounter some adult language in the Talk Back section, which is mostly unmoderated.

Oh, and I'm not responsible if you become addicted to deals.

Ahhh, I finally got the last few problems sorted out. Since I'm cleaning the page up, I'll toss the recent "ugly updates" on this post. I'm off to scan for deals and get this train rolling again!
    • Update (3/30, 7:40AM): I'm getting pretty close. I think I have things figured out, but I have to wait for settings to apply after a delay each time. I need to head out but I really expect this to be all set tonight. Sorry guys.
    • Update (3/29, 7:30AM): It's nice to see most of my apps are up. It's not nice to see that I can't make new posts because of some file permission issues. I will iron these out with the hosting company this evening - check back then for new deals and thanks for your patience!
    • Update (3/29, midnight): My hosting company had a major problem with one of their servers for most of the day today. Can you guess which one? I'm waiting for full functionality to return, but with any luck we'll be back to normal tomorrow morning. Thanks for the concerned emails!

nifty green arrowRAQ:  Comment on the New Design - One Month Mark
     Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 2/18/2006 around 1PM EST by John  |  permalink

UPDATE (2/19): I tweaked the main post font size down a bit so it would be a little easier to scan. It should look the same in FireFox and IE now, as well. Let me know if you like this better, worse, or didn't even notice the change. Thank for your comments so far!

The new NNDD layout has been up for just over a month. Hopefully you're starting to get a little more used to it.

I'm interested in hearing suggestions on how I can make this site better - link locations, content types, little annoyances you're noticed, that sort of thing. Please weigh in with your comments in Talk Back or email me directly.

My apologies for what was likely a half day of the site being down. I sent my hosting company a half dozen emails last evening and no one was around. I'm glad to wake up and see things running again.

UPDATE: Done. If you see any broken links, please let me know in Talk Back or via email.

If you see anything strange over the next hour or two, that's just me cleaning up some old files. I'm also going to move back to the /nndd directory. If anyone has bookmarked the new /nndd2 site, please update your links. I'll redirect it for awhile.

Bored? I added a little section on the left sidebar that will display the last few games posted, along with a link to their comments so you can gloat over how much higher your score is over mine.

Oh, and I'm linking this post. Got a fun little web game to amuse us? Post a link in the Talk Back section!

Does something look different around here? Yeah, you could say that. I spent a good chunk of the last weekend putting the last tweaks on NNDD's first major redesign since we got this little thing started back in 2002.

I hope you like it. Heck, for now I just hope you don't utterly hate it. I know that whenever I visit a new design on a site I frequent, I miss a lot of the old stuff. Hopefully you'll find some improvements and decide to come back and let things grow on you! Here's to another half decade or so of deals. Thanks for joining me on the ride, and I welcome your feedback in the Talk Back section or via email!
